Short answer: Halloween is celebrated on October 31, the evening before All Saints' Day. It grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain and is known today for costumes, carved pumpkins and trick-or-treating. NanoIP's Halloween sale runs from October 19 to November 2, 2026 (UTC): 20% off residential and mobile proxies, and up to 40% off ISP proxies on longer plans, renewals included.

What is Halloween?

Halloween falls on the evening of October 31 every year. The name is a shortened form of "All Hallows' Eve", the evening before All Hallows' Day, better known as All Saints' Day, on November 1.

Where it comes from

Halloween's roots go back to Samhain, a festival of the Celtic peoples of Ireland, Scotland and other parts of north-western Europe. Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter, a time when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to grow thin. People lit bonfires and wore disguises. When the Church later placed All Saints' Day on November 1, the old customs gathered around the evening before it.

Irish and Scottish emigrants brought the holiday to North America in the 19th century, and it grew from there into the celebration known around the world today.

Halloween traditions

  • Jack-o'-lanterns. In Ireland and Scotland, people carved faces into turnips and lit them from inside. In North America, pumpkins were larger and easier to carve, and they became the symbol of the holiday.
  • Costumes. Dressing up began as a way to disguise yourself on the night spirits were thought to walk. Today costumes range from witches and ghosts to film characters.
  • Trick-or-treating. Children in costume go from door to door saying "trick or treat" and collect sweets.
  • Decorations. Bats, black cats, ghosts, spiders and a full moon appear on houses, in shop windows and on websites, ours included.

Where Halloween is celebrated

Halloween is most widely celebrated in the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. In many other countries it has caught on as a night for costume parties, themed events and shop promotions.

Why Halloween matters for online businesses

For online sellers, Halloween opens the year-end shopping season. It is followed within weeks by Singles' Day on November 11, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas, and sellers change prices, launch seasonal ads and add stock in several markets at once. Proxies help with the checks that come with that:

  • Seasonal ads. Confirm that holiday ads show the right offer, language and landing page in each country, with ad verification from local IPs.
  • Holiday prices. Follow how competitors price their holiday deals in each market with price monitoring.
  • Storefronts and accounts. Keep each store account on its own stable IP through the busy weeks, as in e-commerce operations.
